Case Study: BS4142 noise imapct assessment for an air conditioning unit


Introduction

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC) Council requested a BS4142 noise impact assessment (NIA) report for the planning application of an air conditioning unit for a residential dwelling in Holland Park.

MCS020

The RBKC Council denied planning consent on the MCS020 application due to the proposed source sound level exceeding the permissible background sound level.

BS4142 noise assessment report

The report assessed the noise over 24 hours duration. It was concluded that the unit should be in an acoustic enclosure to succeed with the application.

Planning permission

To be succcessful in the planning application, the specific noise of the air conditioning unit should be 10dB below the background sound level, and 15dB below, if the unit had tonality.
